Vicenç Puig

Prof. Vicenç Puig got the Engineering in Telecommunications at Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) in 1993 and the PhD degree at the same University in the Automatic Control Department in the PhD Programme in “Automatic Control, Vision and Robotics”.
He started teaching in this University as Assistant Professor at 1994. In 2001 he got a permanent position as Professor in Automatic Control. Currently, he is teaching “Automatic Control” and “Computer Control” in the Industrial Engineering degree at Barcelona Industrial Engineering School and “Optimization and Optimal Control” in the Automatic Engineering degree at Terrassa Industrial Engineering School.  He also teached “Diagnosis and Fault Tolerant Control” and “Hybrid Systems” in the PhD Programme  “Automatic Control, Vision and Robotics” of the UPC
He is the leader of the UPC research group “Advanced Control Systems (SAC)” since 2007. He is also the responsible of the “Research Master in Automatic Control and Robotics” of the UPC since 2005. He has also been the responsible of the PhD Programme  “Automatic Control, Vision and Robotics” of the UPC since 2002 until 2009.
The research interests of SAC and Prof. Vicenç Puig cover several fields of advanced control systems, such as model identification, intelligent & predictive control and supervision of complex systems. In particular, he has important scientific contributions in areas of Fault Diagnosis and Fault Tolerant Control using models that includes uncertainty, specially structured uncertainty (interval models). His is also interested in the Identification, Simulation and Robust Control of those systems. In the domain of the Advanced Control System he was or he is participating in more than 15 international & national research projects in the last decade. He has directed 6 Doctoral theses and currently is directing 10 more. His recent scientific production (2000-2009) is very active, he has published 2 books, 3 chapter of books and more than 25 articles in International magazines. He has also presented more than 250 proceedings in International Conferences and Workshops and he has participated in more than 5 Internationals Committees and representations as a member in the last decade. In 2000, he was member of the NOC of the IFAC Workshop of PID Control hosted in Terrassa. In 2002, he was also member of the NOC of the most important event in Automatic Control, the XV IFAC World Congress hosted in Barcelona. While this last year 2009 he was member of the NOC and Editor of the IFAC Symposium SAFEPROCESS’2009 hosted in Barcelona. One of the most important efforts of Prof. Vicenç Puig and SAC group is the knowledge transfer of their expertise to the innovation of industrial companies. A summary of the last achievements are: Barcelona’s sewer optimal control system for CLABSA (CORAL Project); Santiago de Chile water network management for Aguas Andinas (PLIO Project); Integrated vehicle health management for BOEING R&T Center; Management of water network of AGBAR; Catalonia water network year balance of ATLL. Currently, he is involved in several on-going projects. The most remarkable is “Decentralized and Wireless Control of Large Scale Systems (WIDE)” (EU Strep FP-7 project ref. INF-SO-ICT-224168).
